Masks of Fear: A Poem

Masked faces hide

Mouths, noses, chins

But cannot shroud

The terror in our eyes.

Strangers approach

We give them wide berth

Like wary deer

Near circling wolves.

Veiled contempt

In polite platitudes of

“Sorry,”

“Pardon me.”

Do He or She have

IT?

We wonder

As gloved hands

Encased in latex and Purell

Repel touch.

Leaving us desolately

Separate

And alone.
